Faction(s): Brotherhood of the Good Shepherd; on friendly terms with the Dreamers
DESCRIPTION & BACKGROUND
Father Carlos is a small, spare (5'6", 140 lbs) Hispanic man. Unless he's gardening or doing other potentially dirty work he will be dressed in the traditional uniform of a Roman Catholic priest.
Carlos Jimenez grew up dirt-poor on the east side of Milwaukee in a very religious family. Determined from an early age to enter the priesthood, he scraped together money for the necessary education working any job he could, picking up a solid grounding in mechanics in the process. Between his hard work and generous assistance from the Brotherhood of the Good Shepherd, he was able to study philosophy and theology and eventually graduate with honors. He was ordained a priest at the age of 24.
Today, Father Jimenez runs St. Joseph's parish in Appleton. Besides seeing to the spiritual needs of his congregation there, he also travels throughout the Fox River Valley seeing to the needs of Catholics in areas that don't have a full-time priest. He takes particular pains to see that newborn infants receive baptism, couples can have church-sanctioned weddings in a reasonable time frame, and those wanting to make confession have a priest available to hear it. He is also very active in charitable work throughout the region, organizing food pantries and emergency shelters for the very poor and religious-centered education programs for area children. Due to the limited budget of the parish, he puts part of his own salary into these projects, leaving him perennially short of funds.
Despite their very different approach to matters spiritual, Father Carlos has taken an active interest in the Dreamers. The mechanic side of him is drawn to their interesting new approaches to technology, while his activist side sees its potential to improve the standard of living for the population at large and reduce the brutal class divisions that make his charity work so difficult and so constant. Recently he has begun efforts to create basic bonds of friendship and mutual interest between the Dreamers and the Brotherhood of the Good Shepherd, while trying to persuade his superiors in the Brotherhood of the merits of drawing closer to them. Over time he hopes to cement a more formal alliance that will benefit people of all faiths throughout the state and undermine the power of the oppressive Crawley regime by creating greater prosperity.
PCs in the Fox River Valley are likely to bump into Father Carlos as he attends to his clerical duties; Catholic characters might look him up for confession, spiritual guidance, etc. He is a frequent visitor to Dreamer facilities that allow outsiders, checking out new developments and trying to be a spokesman for his church. Father Carlos is a firm believer in the right of his church to provide sanctuary; characters menaced by enemies in the region could use St. Joseph's as a temporary place of refuge. He opposes the current government's policies; while he will not take an active hand in attacking it or promote violence, he will generally be willing to provide moral and some material support to activists, and glad to introduce them to like-minded people.
